The Next Challenge Is Getting Close! It Is On Saturday, 19th January 2008 2008 CHALLENGE Dannevirke To Akitio Over $10,000 Cash and Spot Prizes
It’s that time of year again – time to start training for the Infracon Challenge, the Multisports event that has grown in popularity since it began in 1990 - 17 years ago. The challenge is being held on the Saturday, January 19th 2008.
The majority of competitors come from the lower North Island but competitors have come as far as Auckland to attend this event. The number of locals from the Dannevirke district increases each year. This year we are trying to focus on the younger generation, knowing that there are some very talented young people out there doing some amazing things in the different sporting codes.
For the last couple of years the organizing committee has added the option of a duathlon. This seems to suit people who are not confident on the water in kayaks.
The Infracon Challenge consists of a fairly interesting course consisting of the first leg which is the bike ride; this is 55kms over some large hills and through the river valley towards Waione. The run is 13kms on a tar sealed road with some drink stops for the competitors. The competitor then kayaks down the Akitio River towards the beach with a short run to the finish line.
In the past people have maybe finished one leg in a team situation and really enjoyed this and decided to do the whole event as an individual the following year.
We are a small committee with a lot of hard work ahead of us. Most of us choose to do some part of the course on the day and to help with the overall organizing, and with the help of the Akitio community and our regular sponsors this is one day that is too important to miss.
